Attack vs. Damage in Sea of Conquest

Every hero has an attack power in Sea of Conquest, calculated differently in naval warfare and close combat. Here, we will focus on naval warfare calculations since it is the main PvP aspect of the game. The damage is derived from the hero's attack power. Each hero's skill deals damage based on the attack-damage ratio of their skills.

All the calculations we will be explaining later are the result of numerous trials with different combinations of stats and formulas. The formula we developed produces numbers that closely match those observed in the game. We can see the attack power of a ship on the ship formations page in the game. We also know the strength (STR) stats of the heroes from the heroes page, with each STR point adding to 0.2% of the ship's attack. What we interpret from this knowledge is that the heroes' attack power depends on the ship they are aboard and is calculated from the ship's base attack power (excluding STR). We will try to explain with pictures and calculations what this means and how it works.

We took the Goddess Satjit ship as an example. On the formation page, click on the "i" next to Attributes to see all the stats of the ship.

First, we need to know how to calculate the total attack of the ship without heroes aboard. This will help us understand how the attack bonus changes affect the heroes' attack power and further help us compare the attack bonus and damage bonus.

Total Attack (without STR) Calculation

[ Base Attack x (Attack Bonus +1) ] x Sailor Bonus

We deselected all Heroes from Goddess Satjit to test the Total Attack without STR calculations (see where to find stats below).

Example:

[962 x (0.351 + 1)] x 2.792 = [962 x 1.351] x 2.792 = 3628.656

The total attack shown in the game is 3629, while our calculations similarly resulted in 3628.656. Keep in mind bonuses should be converted from percentages to decimal numbers.

STR to Attack Calculation

Total Attack without STR x [ 1 + (STR x 0,002) ]

We only placed Ophelia on the ship to test the calculations of STR, with each STR point adding to 0.2% of the ship's attack. First we need to recalculate the new Total Attack without STR since the attack bonus increased after we placed Ophelia.

Example:

[962 x (0.531 + 1)] x 2.792 = 4112.119 (Total Attack without STR)

4112.119 x [ 1 + (2151 x 0,002) ] = 21802.46 (Ship's Total Attack with only Ophelia aboard)

The total attack shown in the game is 21801 while our calculations similarly resulted in 21802.46. Keep in mind bonuses should be converted from percentages to decimal numbers.

Heroes' Attack Power Calculation

Total Attack without STR x ( STR x 0.002 )

This time we will place Sharky and Qi Lanting along with Ophelia on the ship to do the calculations with new bonuses. Then we need to recalculate the new Total Attack without STR then we calculate Ophelia's Attack Power in this ship.

Example:

[962 x (0.891 + 1)] x 2.792 = 5079.044 (Total Attack without STR)

5079.044 x (2151 x 0.002) = 21850.05 (Ophelia's Attack Power)

Heroes' Damage Calculation

We previously calculated Ophelia's attack power with no extra bonuses, which is 21850.04.

Her main skill deals Artillery Damage equal to 156% of her attack to the enemy which is With Goddess Satjit having a 28.7% Damage Bonus and a 23% Artillery Damage Bonus, Ophelia's skill will deal 207.7% Artillery Damage instead of 156%. In that case, Ophelia's main skill Damage becomes 45382.552.

Attack Bonus vs. Damage Bonus

There is no ultimate better between Attack and Damage bonuses. Damage Bonus is better when [Attack Bonus + 1] is higher than the Damage ratio of the skill with other damage bonuses applied. Attack Bonus is better when [Attack Bonus + 1] is lower than the Damage ratio of the skill with other damage bonuses applied.

We will conduct an experiment for Goddess Satjit and Ophelia. In the first case, we won't consider damage attributes, and in the second case, we'll include damage attributes.

Main skill dealing Artillery Damage equal to 156-166% of Ophelia's attack:
stats with no dmg att.png

The first row of the table shows the numbers with no bonuses applied. The second row shows the numbers with a +10% Attack Bonus. The third row shows the numbers with a +10% Damage Bonus.

As can be seen from the table above, the Attack Bonus is 0.891, and [Attack Bonus + 1] is 1.891. The Damage Ratio is 1.56. In this case, [Attack Bonus + 1] is higher than the Damage Ratio, so having more Damage Bonus results in more damage dealt from hero skills.

Main skill dealing Artillery Damage equal to 208-218% of Ophelia's attack:

The first row of the table shows the numbers with no bonuses applied. The second row shows the numbers with a +10% Attack Bonus. The third row shows the numbers with a +10% Damage Bonus.

As can be seen from the table above, the Attack Bonus is 0.891, and [Attack Bonus + 1] is 1.891. The Damage Ratio is 2.08. In this case, [Attack Bonus + 1] is lower than the Damage Ratio, so having more Attack Bonus results in more damage dealt from hero skills.

Final Comments:

For some heroes, the skill's damage ratio to their attack is higher than usual. Some heroes deal damage equal to 300%-400% of their attack. As you level up and enhance your hero skills, this ratio will keep increasing. This means that in most situations, Attack Bonuses will provide more benefits than Damage Bonuses. However, you still need to check your attributes to determine which bonus will suit your ships better. Additionally, keep in mind that Damage Bonuses affect the hero's damage, while Attack Bonuses affect both the heroes and the ship's attack, including sailors, basic attacks, etc.
